When I was young I was very fond of Perry Mason books ( I am not sure if the younger generation can identify with that).
In those books, there was clue after clue but no one could really get the bigger picture till he did the big reveal at the end
Time and time again I am face with this big dilemma when customers insist on buying data transfer packs and then refuse to look at the useage. They even completely ignore our data transfer clause in our terms of service and clamor saying that we are cheats, something they would not even dare with bigger brands
So taking a leaf out of one of my favorite authors books, I have decided to do the big reveal
Let us understand where this data transfer is being used:
1) Every PC, Router, Mobile Phone, Tablet, Smart TV, Playstation and other network connected devices sends a keep alive signal (also called a heartbeat) --- This is a minuscule amount of data but multiply this with multiple devices per person and we do get a slight chunk of data useage

2) Auto Updates: Every device has 2 kinds of Update, voluntary and involuntary. Lets take a small update of data say 21MB.
Now 1 GB = 1024 MB
Therefore 48 Updates of new installs or updates of programs of this size would exhaust 1GB of data. (With multiple devices in a house, we can see how much data this would use).
Some apps (not all apps even download and keep installs ready in the background like software updates.) - Software updates arre large files
And we go on happily installing new apps and updating them and call the ISP wrong

3) Whats App Images ..... All those Good Mornings, Happy Diwali Happy anything and every single image / video takes data the moment you press download. What no one looks at is the number on the image before download.
The best part is even if people look at that blurry video with 3MB written after it and download it, they forward it and that adds another big chunk
4) Each small message on WhatsApp consumes data which customers refuse to look at
5) Youtube videos run at 512Kbps even at the lowest setting and upto 4Mbps at full HD. Lets even take the lowest resolution, 512Kbps means 0.5MegabitsPerSecond
8bits = 1Byte therefore a video of 1 min takes 60 sec X (0.5/8)Megabits = 3.75MB
If its full HD then 30MB per minute

6) Facetime and Skype and Hangout video calls have the same formula as you tube and netflix, etc.
There is also a third party reference site for easy co-relation of the kind of data pack you should purchase based upon your needs
7) So many, so many clues, and yet the finger of suspicion is pointed at my clients who stand charged of the crime
Therefore My Lord, by the evidence its clear who murdered the bandwidth and my client the defendant should be freed.
